What is drum synthesis?
Drum synthesis creates percussion from oscillators, noise and fast envelopes. Each builds part of a hit, its attack, its pitched body and its decay, so a kick, snare or hi-hat can be shaped in detail and can change with every strike.
How it works
A synthesized drum is usually built from a few simple layers. A kick drum is often a sine wave whose pitch falls rapidly, which gives its punch, with a click on top for the attack. A snare combines a short pitched tone for the drum’s body with filtered noise for its wires. Hi-hats and cymbals use noise or clusters of square waves, filtered to a metallic shimmer and shaped by very short envelopes.
The transient, the first few milliseconds of a hit, does much of the work in how a drum cuts through a mix, so drum synthesis gives it careful control. Envelopes on pitch and level set how a hit snaps and decays, and drive or saturation adds weight.
Percussion instruments often combine synthesis with samples, layering a recorded attack over a synthesized body, or use physical models of membranes and shells. Rhythm sits beside the sound, in sequencers that build patterns step by step and add accents, variation and probability.
What it sounds like
Drum synthesis gives the deep kicks, snappy snares and crisp hats of electronic music, and percussion that recordings struggle to match, from tuned toms that follow a melody to hits that change subtly every time they play.
Key terms
- Transient
- The short, sharp start of a sound, where much of a drum’s character lives.
- Pitch envelope
- An envelope that bends a sound’s pitch, such as the fast downward sweep of a kick drum.
- Noise
- A random signal containing many frequencies at once, filtered to make snares, hats and cymbals.
- Decay
- How long a hit takes to fade away.
- Step sequencer
- A grid that triggers sounds on chosen steps of a bar to build rhythmic patterns.
- Velocity
- How hard a note is played, which can change a hit’s level, brightness and pitch.
In The Kinetic Star
The Kinetic Star is Xionia Audio’s percussion synthesizer. It brings drum synthesis, sampling and rhythmic creation together in one instrument, where every strike has its own character. Its pitch, transient, body, decay and resonance can each have a Motion Wave of its own.
